Well-Being

Well-being describes how students think about and experience their lives. Well-being tells school and community leaders how their students are managing today, and predicts their success in the future. Current research shows students with a high well-being score earn more academic credits and show higher overall performance than peers with low well-being. A typical student with high well-being alone will demonstrate a 13% better academic performance than a similar student with low well-being.

The items in the poll that measure Evaluative Well-being are:

  • Please imagine a ladder with steps numbered from zero at the bottom to ten at the top. The top of the ladder represents the best possible life for you and the bottom of the ladder represents the worst possible life for you. On which step of the ladder would you say you feel you stand at this time? (Well-being; presented with ladder graphic, 0 at the bottom of the ladder and 10 at the top.)
  • On which step do you think you will stand about five years from now?

The items in the poll that measure Experiential Well-being are:

  • Please think about yesterday, from the morning until the end of the day. Think about where you were, what you were doing, who you were with and how you felt as your respond to the next six items:
    • Were you treated with respect all day yesterday?
    • Did you smile or laugh a lot yesterday?
    • Did you learn or do something interesting yesterday?
    • Did you have enough energy to get things done yesterday?
    • Do you have health problems that keep you from doing any of the things other people your age normally can do?
    • If you are in trouble, do you have family or friends you can count on to help whenever you need them?
