Hope

Hope describes the ideas and energy that students have for the future. It describes how confident students feel about achieving their goals, dreams and ideal outcomes in life. Hope drives attendance, academic credit earned and the overall performance of high school students. Specifically, students with high Hope perform better in all core subjects, score higher on achievement tests and have significantly less days absent from school. Hope is also proven as a more robust predictor of undergraduate success than high school to university entrance examinations.

The items in the poll that measure Hope are:

  • I know I will complete high school.
  • There is an adult in my life who cares about my future.
  • I can think of many ways to get good marks.
  • I energetically pursue my goals.
  • I can find lots of ways around any problem.
  • I know I will find a good job after I leave school.
